Silent Witness VigilĀ
The Silent Witness Initiative began in 1990 with the purpose of remembering the names and stories of domestic violence fatalities. Now it takes place in all 50 states and at least 23 countries.
Each year, SAFE San Juans sets up a Silent Witness exhibit in Friday Harbor, Eastsound, and Lopez Village to honor the victims, raise awareness, and advocate for change. This year’s exhibit honors 47 known domestic violence deaths.
Death statistics illustrate a tragic end to life but are a small representation of domestic violence. According to state law enforcement, there were 54,294 domestic violence offenses committed last year, in the same time frame as those 47 deaths. In addition, it is estimated that 44% of all nonfatal instances domestic violence will go unreported.
