Ham Radio License Class and Exam

A number of Lopezians have expressed interest in getting their Amateur Radio License. There are many reasons to get licensed, including communications during emergencies, chatting with people around the world and learning new technologies.

Lopez Radio “Hams” associated with the San Juan County Amateur Radio Society will conduct study sessions and administer the exam at the Lopez Library. The schedule is as follows:

Tue, Oct 30, 6-9 PM – Session 1
Thu, Nov 1, 6-9 PM – Session 2
Sat, Nov 3, 8-10 AM – Review and Exam

We will teach you how to pass the exam for the entry level Technician license. The test has 35 multiple choice questions. Based on experience, students who attend the 2 sessions, review the the book and take online practice tests at home will pass the exam.

Cost for the Technician class is $20 for the study book. The exam is $15 for the American Radio Relay League to process the license application. We will also offer the opportunity to purchase an Amateur Radio handy talkie when you get your license (about $60). We will program the radios for locally used frequencies and conduct a learning session on Saturday, November 17.

In the future we will offer training for the two higher level licenses with more operating privileges.

We are able to accommodate up to 15 people. Please register by October 10th by sending me an email at K7BLS1@gmail.com.

I would be happy to answer any questions.
